Spring 2022 Courses
Research Mentor Training
Work with a community of peers to develop and improve your research mentoring skills in this engaging seminar. Students will develop their personal mentoring philosophy, learn how to articulate that philosophy across a variety of disciplines, and refine strategies for dealing with mentoring challenges. This intensive 6-week course meets online on Thursdays from March 17 through April 21 at 2:00 – 4:00 pm ET. Students will need to spend 1.5-2 hours per week on work outside of class sessions. This course is limited to 20 participants.
Postdoc Teaching Practicum
Work with an experienced instructor in your discipline to enhance your understanding and experience of teaching a university course in this semester-long mentorship program designed for postdoctoral fellows. This semester-long practicum has 5 online sessions at 1:00-3:00 pm ET on Wednesday, January 12, February 2, March 2, March 23, and April 20. Participants will need to do most of their work outside of sessions, including teaching observations and guest lecturing. This course is limited to 30 participants.
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
- Advancing Learning Through Evidence-Based STEM Teaching – Asynchronous modules start Monday, January 31, 2022.
- The Postdoc Academy: Succeeding as a Postdoc – This 6-week course addresses foundational skills and career planning, establishing the professional habits postdocs will need to strategically prepare for their career and succeed in their postdoc. Asynchronous modules start January 24, 2022.

Fall 2021 Courses
The College Classroom
Get an introduction to key learning principles and the basics of effective, evidence-based teaching practices in this course about teaching in the college classroom. This course will focus on developing inclusive, learner-centered approaches to teaching. Students will explore the interconnectedness of learning objectives, assessment, and learning activities through both discussion of course materials and developing and practicing their own lesson plan. This 12-week course has weekly online sessions on Wednesdays at 2:00-3:30 pm ET from September 29 through December 15. Participants will need to spend 1.5-2 hours per week on work outside of class sessions. This course is limited to 30 participants.

Explore teaching and learning fundamentals in this intensive 2-week course (typically 6 weeks) designed for future and early career faculty. Cap: 50.
Research Mentor Training

Transforming Your Research Into Teaching
Learn how to build a course out of your research specialty in this 7-week course that guides grad students and postdocs through the fundamentals of course design. Cap: 20.

Advancing Learning through Evidence-Based STEM Teaching (Massive Open Online Course, or MOOC)
Learn about developing effective, evidence-based STEM teaching practices at your own pace through online video modules and discussion boards in this 8-week MOOCoffered asynchronously from January 25 – March 21, 2021. No attendance cap, and late registration is allowed for those who wish to explore the course materials. Offered through EdX Audit Track at no cost, with a letter of completion available from the instructors.
Basics of Online Learning and Teaching
This blended synchronous-asynchronous course provides an overview of effective online pedagogy and theory behind how to build you own courses or modules. Offered January 25 – March 29, 2021, with 1 credit optional (if arranged through independent study at participants’ home institution).

Early registration for spring courses is open from December 10 – January 7, and is highly recommend if a course has a small capacity. Cornell is a CIRTL member institution, so Cornell affiliates (including graduate students, postdocs, faculty, staff, and alumni) can register during this time.
